Detroit — The Detroit Fire Department has brought a new meaning to Christmas tree lighting, as fire officials held a public demonstration Thursday to show how flammable a fully decorated fir really is.
DFD stages a controlled burning of a live Christmas tree each year in response to the increase in holiday fires caused by dry trees, decorative lights, space heaters and candles.
“Fires spike when people start to use alternative heating devices and don’t use fire safety rules,” said Capt. Chris Dixon, who’s participated in the staged burnings the last 18 years.
